JDA first Auction BS'D Hi every one, I want to thank all the people that have been involved in making this Nov 10th Melave Malka/Auction such a special night
To Devorah (read more about this in her letter in our Parents & Children section), who got this all started--may you grow in the chessed work that has begun at such a young age and may HaShem, your parents and Klal Yisroel have much nachas from you and those that learn from you. It is an inspiration for so many others to see a young girl---who really has no connection to diabetes--pick up on the importance of what JDA has been and B'H is doing.
Tzippy, Ethel and Esther you took her lead and ran with it against all obstacles. Only HaShem can repay you in kind--we are looking forward to seeing all of you at our next health awareness group---which is the bottom line in all our work---working together to lend support and education to stop this epidemic
To all the junior hostesses--we are so glad that it turned out to be a fun evening for all and now we hope you will continue and spread the word winning prizes and selling raffles for our Israel trip
To all the others--all we can say is that the importance of chessed is apparent---helping people be healthy and stay healthy is probably one of the most wonderful chassadim that one could choose---tizku laasot |

What is the patient obligated to know BS'D We received this from one of our members and thought it important to use as an example of what obligation is there on the part of the patient as far as diabetes care is concerned:
B"H I am doing pretty good. I actually don't know what my real numbers are now because when I went for my 3 month test Erev Pesach (before Passover) the dr's office neglected to put down on the prescription that I need my blood tested for the sugar.... they only put down the other tests like cholesterol etc. As you can imagine my Dr is really very good and really in to caring for his patients.........
I will put in my 2 cents after we hear some reactions

cinnamon Hi, I am wondering if you could help me...I keep hearing how healthy taking cinnamon is for diabetes. Do you know of source of kosher cinnamon in a capsule form? I suppose I could shake some on my food...but I don't. SO I figured this would solve that issue. Thanks, Laurie PS Your Enlitened Cookbook is just wonderful. Everyone loves my Shabbos meals. (Even more then before!!!!) Thanks |

Results with sensors PLEASE do NOT read this as a warning against using the sensor. I am VERY in favor of it: I am just more and more aware that the ‘warnings’ from Minimed on taking a finger stick to ‘check’ the blood sugar if it is out of range is VERY important and not just a ‘safety check’ (at least not yet)!!
I called Minimed on Wed. (last week) about repeated horrible results with the sensor. After the 'standard' questions (time between removing from fridge and inserting, time between insertion and hooking up the transmitter, distance from catheter, 'look' and 'feel' of the insertion site) I was asked if I use the LINK meter (and have it communicating with the pump). I answered "Of Course, it's great".
I was then told that
1] Taking more than four tests a day which are 'reported' to the pump MESSES UP the calibration!
2] Taking calibration tests when the sugar is either 'out of range' or 'changing even semi-rapidly' will mess up the calculations the pump makes towards calibrating the sensor.
3] One should NOT use the LINK with the pump if they're using the sensor (or at least turn off the communication mode).
I am thinking of having two 'main' meters: one a link and one a logic (and another a freestyle, as the link's reported blood sugars have led me to thank G-d I only have 10 fingers to try to duplicate a reading on (last night got a 20, 65 and an 87 within four minutes from three VERY clean and nice sample sized fingers)!!
I don't know how other people are handling the sensor but I've also discovered that PLACEMENT could make major differences in how long they last AND how accurate they are:
I put one in the leg after four straight NO GOODS (results off, bleeding, etc). The one in my thigh is going on it's fifth or sixth day, happily reporting results in a 'reproducible' way (using both freestyle and BD to check).
Yerachmiel Altman
{Who, having now achieved 26 years of pumping and approaching his 46th year anniversary of diabetes, is ready for the next big challenge (convincing myself that the sensor results are good enough that I would WANT to close the loop)} Yerachmiel Altman

Answer to Marcy BS'D Since the answer to Marcy's introduction ended up having so much info on healthy traditional eating---we decided that it would be helpful to post it here as well---so that it might be helpful for others
BS'D Hi Marcy,
You wrote: I haven't seen nutritionist or taken class yet and am not testing at this time.
Since diabetes seems to run in your family and you say that you pretty much expected it, I hope you realize that one of the best ways to stay out of trouble is with good control and one of the best ways to stay in good control is getting educated and testing. We do not have x-ray machines to know what is going on inside our bodies, but we were given a great tool with all the new testing equipment that has been coming out. With testing, including after eating we can start to pinpoint our trouble spots and what I call, trigger foods (that trigger a high BG response after eating). Then it becomes easier to choose the right foods for us. Diabetes is a very individual kind of condition, certain foods that will trigger a high BG for you, may not for others and vice versa.
You wrote:found them extremely knowledgeable & supportive. I have lots to read, thanks to them. I've also been exercising & cutting carbs like crazy, & have lost some wt already, but still have a ways to go.
[/b]We are looking forward to your sharing some of that new found knowledge with us and feel free to pass on to others what you learn here. Exercise and weight loss are key factors in helping you keep your diabetes in control..Try not to focus on how far you still have to go, just take it one day at a time.
One of our primary focuses here is Jewish issues and as you go through the site you will find many things exclusive to us
The average large matzah ball has between 10-15 gr. of carbs and it is not a soup but an accompaniment to chicken soup which is considered quite healthy when prepared correctly.
If you go to our Nutrition section you will find a great introduction to eating healthy on Sabbath and holidays, that probably contains quite a few of your favorite foods and you will find hard to find anywhere else.
All the foods and recipes that we list have nutrition facts---without which they do not really serve us well.
Our book is probably the first of its kind listing nutrition facts and giving healthy options for traditional Jewish recipes and many many more.
In our stuffed cabbage recipe we give the option of layering the cabbage and filling, which is an equally good and easy way to go. Raisins, are quite high in carbs, but as I always say, if you must have them and will feel deprived without them---throw in a few---just so that you know they are there--try using brown and long grain rice that has more fiber and try cutting down the amount of rice---you probably won't notice the difference.
You do not have to forfiet your favorite traditional recipes just practice EnLITEning them---and please let us know how you do |

Sugar substitutes and more Dear Nechama,
I just received your new cookbook, and I must say kol hakavod (hats off) to you! It's so full of information, as well as delicious sounding recipes (and it's beautiful, too!) that I can't wait to try. I have been waiting for a kosher cookbook that has healthful recipes but is still appropriate for people who want to continue eating traditional foods - and your book more than fits the bill.
I hope I'm not being too forward, but if possible, I had a few questions - if you have time one day to answer them, I would appreciate it very much.
My first question is about sugar substitutes. Baruch Hashem (thank G-D) I am not diabetic, but I do have weight loss issues and would like to try to use more sugar substitutes instead of sugar in my cooking. However, I am fully nursing, and I have small children (ranging from age 11 1/2 down to six months). My question is, for myself and even more so for my kids, is it advisable to use the sugar substitutes on a constant basis?
Secondly, which sugar substitutes are advisable? Are the stories I hear about the harmful effects of Splenda really true?
Third, we live in Eretz Yisroel, and there are a number of products that I have no idea how to get here. Do you know if they have: soy protein powder, soy flour, soy crumbles, almond flour and light whipped topping here with a mehadrin hechsher (strict kosher certification)? If so, do you have any idea of where to obtain them?
Again, thank you for a very important contribution to kosher cooking!
Kol tuv, Dafna

Soft cheese Dear Nechama: A friend brought me a copy of your wonderful book when he came to visit for Pesach. I love the recipes and info contained within. I finally have a realistic guide for helping my husband deal with his diabetes (and it certainly isn't hurting me deal with my weight problem). We've both lost about 15 pounds since Pesach and more importantly feel 100% better.
Each night I skim through the book looking for ideas and gathering info.
The book has a permanent place on my counter.
For the time being I have two questions for you: what is soft cheese? Can I send you a recipe for analysis? Ellen |
